Danilo Bucchi (Rome, 1978) uses various techniques, such as drawing, painting, photography and digital experimentation, to express his long-time exploration of signs: the freedom of his style and his preference for black on white, signs that are recognizable and repeating, like notes in a musical composition. This style may also be seen in Volume V.15. The sculpture renders three dimensional the two dimensional figures in Bucchi’s universe, especially those in the video .0, presented in the Court of MAXXI L’Aquila on June 22, 2023 and accessible using a QR code.
The video features anthropomorphic figures being drawn one after another by an invisible hand. During this transformation linking the individual and the other by making it part of a composite being, the empty areas fill with color until gradually the black covers the entire background. The sculpture, which is the first subject that appears in the video, comes into being by materializing and detaching from the composition it was initially conceived for, inspiring reflection on the concept of memory. A figure we can only recall, an attempt to give “volume” to memory: from its digital version, visible only on-screen, to the tangible one, placed inside the public space.
The aim is for the Court of Palazzo Ardinghelli, a passage between Via Garibaldi and Piazza Santa Maria in Paganica, to become a new piazza in the capital city of the Abruzzo Region. Volume V.15 is an invitation for people to approach Bucchi’s imaginative world and experience the dynamic, open nature of his art.
