2024 – Oltretutto – MAXXI – Roma
Oltretutto is the title of Danilo Bucchi’s latest project, an artist’s book in which the author expresses his point of view on portraiture.
Oltretutto is a project consistent with Bucchi’s research, which has always investigated the language of signs and their unconscious origins. Oltretutto sees the author as a photographer and spectator of other people’s drawings. Eighty portraits, each one in dialogue with itself: the appearance that questions the substance, the form that transmits the content.
Oltretutto is160-page book edited by DRAGO, that goes “beyond” the boundaries of the artistic research and drags the viewer into a game of intimate and – at the same time – universal references. This project has involved the author for more than nine years and has given life to a catalogue raisonné in which the gaze goes beyond the portrait, it goes Oltretutto. Each portrait speaks about itself and each drawing speaks about the portrait. Danilo Bucchi photographs a variegated humanity and invites them to express themselves through the language of drawing. Writers, directors, actors, stylists, musicians, curators, museum directors as well as unknown faces, encountered on the streets of Rome, Milan, Berlin, Paris, New York and Tokyo. Curated by Achille Bonito Oliva, Oltretutto gives voice to faces and images that tell a private story through portraiture that Danilo Bucchi has managed to make intelligible and emotional.
The artwork is everything for the artist as it is for the other creative subjects.
Beyond there are the unexpected events of life and the forms in its creativity.
But creation in itself does not exhaust the impetus of an imagination that also pursues experience.
The portrait hides something else; it hides other evidence that accompanies the definition of the work.
Here what is hidden is revealed by other signs that the subject traces alongside as a slip of an identity open to many solutions.
